In one week, one of the most dominant teams in Iowa High School basketball history will return home to celebrate a special occasion. The 1990 Pella Christian boys basketball team will all attend a showing of the documentary “Soar Mighty Eagles” on Thursday, January 16th, with doors opening at 6 p.m. at Pella Christian High School. The feature highlights the 25-0 Eagles run to the school’s first ever state championship win, the first of three in a four year span for one of the greatest Iowa basketball programs over the past three decades. Eric Pothoven was a sophomore on the 1990 Eagles, and eventually became the all-time leading career scorer at Pella Christian, and says he looks forward to returning to Pella to celebrate what the special year meant to all involved, and in the 30 years since.

“Interestingly enough, I have never even been in the new high school,” he says. “I don’t think I’ve seen a Pella Christian basketball game since my freshman year of college, so it’s been a long time, and it’s just a chance to see some people I haven’t seen, in some cases, for 25 to 30 years…it’s going to be great.”

“The fact that we’re all able to get back and relive that experience, and again, see maybe the results and fruits of that labor with the team now, and I’ve heard some great things about the team this year.”

Following the Soar Mighty Eagles documentary showing on January 16th, the 1990 championship team will be honored at the home game against Oskaloosa the following night.
