An increased spring flood risk is in place after another active month of snowfall across central Iowa and the midwest. According to the National Weather Service, high soil moisture prior to this winter, coupled with nearly two feet of snow falling across most of the state this season so far, has increased the flood risk to the Missouri and Mississippi river basins. Additional snow fall and rapid melting could cause more significant issues, however, long term forecast projections give an equal chance of above or below normal precipitation for the remainder of the winter for the region, but higher chances further north in the state and in the region. The first official Spring flood outlook issued by the National Weather Service is scheduled in mid-February. Stay tuned to 92.1 KRLS for the latest weather information.
