The PCM basketball teams hosted two of the best basketball teams in Class 1A Thursday evening, as Montezuma visited Monroe for a non-conference doubleheader. The Mustang girls fell in a close contest, 54-45, to the #1-ranked team. PCM put together a strong first quarter, and held a 14-4 lead after one. The Braves came back to tie it at halftime, outscoring PCM 16-6 in the second. A strong third quarter proved to be too much for PCM to overcome as a comeback effort in the fourth fell short. Regan Freland scored 16 points, while Lilli Baird added 15. PCM falls to 7-8 on the season.
The PCM boys came out on top in a double-overtime thriller, a 55-53 win. The two teams traded buckets throughout the contest, as neither team was able to sustain momentum to put the game out of reach. Derek Brown scored 26 points to lead the way while Jason Stafford added 18. PCM improves to 11-5 on the season. Both teams will be back in action this evening, hosting Nevada as conference play continues. Boys head coach Fred Lorensen hopes his team can get the win after a close loss to the Cubs earlier in the season.
PCM also had five individuals competing at a triangular at ADM, though no Mustang was able to pick up a win. PCM heads to Fairfield for a tournament on Saturday.
