The Indianola boys basketball team earned their biggest victory of the season Tuesday night, blowing out the Mustangs of Dallas Center-Grimes 83-46, while the girls fell behind and couldn’t catch up in a 60-44 defeat in a senior night doubleheader heard live on 94.3 KNIA. The Indians boys scored early and often in a wild first quarter, earning a 25-14 lead with efficient offense. The barrage continued in the second quarter for a 47-31 lead, and pulled away in a massive third quarter. The Indians outscored the Mustangs 28-8 in the third, getting a running clock and emptying out the bench in the fourth. Head coach Brett Watson tells KNIA Sports he couldn’t be more proud of his seniors, not just for their accomplishments on the court.
“I’m proud of my seniors. This is their night, we talked about it before and after the game about how this was about them and the work they have put in for this program. I know they are going to be successful in whatever they decide to do just because of the behaviors and examples they have set, and I’m really proud to be their coach.”
Tyce Johnson and AJ Toigo each scored 18 to lead the Indians, while Blake Kennedy scored 16 including 10-11 free throw shooting. The Indians girls did not fare as well, as early foul trouble and hot shooting from the Fillies got them behind 20-5 in the first quarter. A run in the second quarter got the lead down to five at 25-20 late in the second, but a 10-0 run by DCG before halftime but a comeback out of reach. The Indians traded blows in the second half, getting the lead under double digits several times, but were unable to mount a significant run. Lauren Blake scored 13 to lead the Indians. The boys improve to 13-3 and 8-2 in Little Hawkeye Conference play, the girls fall to 11-6 and 8-2. Both teams will next play Friday at Grinnell.
