In January, Governor Kim Reynolds, during her Condition of the State Address, called for changes to Iowa’s tax system and a 1-cent increase in the state sales tax, part of which will be used to fund water quality and outdoor recreation programs. Governor Reynolds also called for the state’s general fund to pay for a significant portion of mental health services which would help relieve Iowa’s counties of the responsibility of paying the entire cost of mental health through property taxes, theoretically lowering those taxes. Senator Amy Sinclair tells KNIA/KRLS News there is a lot of resistance to the sales tax increase in the rural areas she represents. She says some people feel a sales tax is regressive and may not be the way to move forward. Sinclair says she is open to the conversation but wants to hear from the people she represents. People will have the opportunity to share their thoughts and concerns with Senator Sinclair as she and State Representative Jon Thorup will hold a Town Hall event on Saturday, February 15th at the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame and Museum in Knoxville at 12:30 p.m.
