Knoxville Middle School students were recently rewarded for their positive activities and behaviors over the past quarter. On Thursday, January 23, sixth- and seventh-grade students took a trip to the Knoxville Recreation Center, where they swam, played basketball and took part in a variety of other sports and activities. Eighth-grade students, meanwhile, attended an Iowa Wolves basketball game in Des Moines on Tuesday. The rewards are part of the school’s Positive Behavior Intervention System (PBIS) program. Each quarter, rewards are planned by members of the student council. To earn the second-quarter reward, students could have no more than three detentions. More than 90 percent of KMS students qualified for the second quarter. PBIS has been successful throughout the school district. Northstar Elementary, for example, implemented a new PBIS Panther Store, along with yoga and mindfulness in the classroom.
