The final totals are in for this year’s Knoxville High School Coaches vs Cancer event. The event in its 12th year once again was able to raise over $50,000 for the American Cancer Society, as Knoxville brought in a total of $55,100 pushing the all-time total at $628,136. Of the over $55,000 raised for this year’s event, $22,385 came from this year’s Cancer Relay. Head Girls Basketball Coach and Co-Organizer of the event, Jim Uitermarkt tells KNIA/KRLS News 70 percent of the money raised from the event will stay in Marion County. He says the money is used to help families in Marion County battling the disease with things such as hotel rooms for when they have to go to doctors appointments out of town. Uitermarkt says the rest of the money goes to cancer research and he believes that is perfect because the event is all about the community doing what they can, to one day get rid of the disease. This year’s event also featured special “The Kings and Queens of Highway 14 Series” trophies which were made with collaborative efforts of Knoxville and Chariton high school students.
