The Indianola basketball squads swept Oskaloosa Tuesday night on their home court with a pair of lopsided scores, the boys getting their third straight game into running clock with an 87-47 blowout, while the girls pulled away late from a surprising Osky squad 66-45. The Indians boys went on an early run in the first with AJ Toigo drives to the hoop getting easy layups, earning a 30-21 lead after the first eight minutes. The Indians pulled away in the second quarter however, holding Osky to just three points and scoring 23 for a 53-24 lead. The Indians continued their barrage in the third, eventually emptying out the bench in the fourth for the win. Head coach Brett Watson tells KNIA Sports what he likes most about his squad right now is they are playing with the same amount of intensity regardless of opponent.
“This is how we are capable of playing, the level we can play at, and we have to continue to bring it every night. Focus and toughness are the two areas we have to bring in practice and games, and I felt we did that tonight and got a really good result because of that. So that’s the bottom line, we focus on ourselves and the behavior that we have to do to be successful.”
Toigo scored 25 in the win, while Caden Rehmeier dropped 13. The Indians girls had a much tougher matchup against an one-win Osky squad, who gave Indianola all they could handle early on. The Indians were ice cold from outside and trailed 14-8 at the end of the first, with things not much improving in the second for a 21-20 halftime advantage. Indianola showed signs of pulling away in the second half building a double-digit lead, but Osky hung around eventually getting the deficit to just seven with only five minutes remaining. The Indians poured it on from there however, as they scored 22 points to get the 21 point win. Lauren Blake scored 23 in the contest to lead the squad, with all but three coming in the second half. The Indians boys are now 15-3 on the season and 10-2 in conference play, while the girls are 13-6 and 10-2. Both teams will next play tomorrow hosting Grinnell.
