The Central women’s tennis team gets the spring portion of their season underway Saturday, traveling to Cedar Rapids for a triangular with Coe and Webster. It’s a team with some local talent, as Pella alumna Bronwyn Metcalf enters her sophomore campaign. Former Knoxville Panthers Alex Griggs and Sami Thompson will begin their freshman and senior seasons for the Dutch tennis team. Head Coach Ryun Ferrell says it will be a weekend to find out what his team is made of, after only five days of practice.
“Saturday for us will be more like, let’s just see what we can do. I have no idea what’s going to happen, I have no idea how good Coe or Webster is going to be because they’re both in the same boat that we are. They haven’t played a lot, so I think it’s going to be some ugly, some good tennis at points, but it is what it is, it’s the first weekend. You have to have a first weekend at some point, and when Coe called me and asked if we wanted to play Coe and Webster, you have to say yeah. They’ve got a nice indoor facility, good coaches, and they’ve got a Pancheros and I love Pancheros, and we’re going to eat some of that good stuff afterwards.”
The conference season in women’s tennis takes place in the fall, so the spring schedule features mostly non-conference opponents. The match with Webster gets underway at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, with the match against Coe starting at 4:00 on the Coe College campus in Cedar Rapids.
