A nationally renowned expert on proficiency-based learning and assessment has been working with Knoxville Community School District staff this school year, and will once again visit the district this spring.

In January, Tony Reibel of Solution Tree presented “Pathways to Proficiency: Implementing Proficiency-Based Pedagogy and Evidence Based Grading” to the district’s middle school and high school staff. Then, in February, he returned to lead an individualized coaching session for a small group of teachers to provide continued support in their work.

Reibel will return in April and again in the fall to provide ongoing differentiated and individualized coaching sessions to help support the work of middle school and high school staff. Among the topics Reibel has covered is grading with standards. He offered examples to help staff members redirect their goals so that they better support proficiency-focused teaching and learning. Staff have also explored implementation strategies and change management tools for carrying out proficiency-based assessment and grading.
