No. 7 Pella Christian will aim to snap one of the longest winning streaks in Class 2A when they enter the field of eight in the 2020 Iowa High School State Basketball Tournament Monday evening. Treynor is the No. 2 seed, and riding a 17 game winning streak into Wells Fargo arena, second only behind the 50 in a row won by defending undefeated champions North Linn in the 2A field.
Eagles Head Coach Larry Hessing says the Cardinals have 6-10 Jon Schwarte and forward Jack Tiark and their strong presence in the paint, as well as a strong ball handler and shooter in Jack Stogdill.
“They have some dominant inside players with a 6-10 player,” Hessing says. “He’s a little bit lean but he’s been starting for them for three years, and he’s 6-10, so he does a good job inside, and then they have a power forward who is about 6-4, 210…he’s kind of a dunking machine, so they have a powerful inside game and that’s what they look for.”
The Eagles will look to counter with Josh Van Gorp, who is averaging 10.1 rebounds per game, which is 9th most in Class 2A, and he leads P.C. with 16.2 points per game. The Cardinals’ Schwarte has 59 blocked shots on the season, 4th most in the class.
Treynor averages 68.3 points per game, 7th best in 2A, and boasts the 8th ranked defense allowing 43.4 points per contest. Pella Christian has faced the toughest schedule in the class and state tournament field, according to power rankings site BCMoore, and has the 11th most efficient offense at 66.3 points per game.
Pella Christian vs. Treynor begins at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the Class 2A State Quarterfinals, and pregame begins at 6 p.m. on 92.1 KRLS.
