It will be a clash of styles when No. 3 Pella opens in the Class 3A state tournament quarterfinals next week.
The fast-paced Dutch will take on the towering Warriors of No. 6 seeded Sergeant Bluff-Luton. While Pella will look to find success behind what has been the highest scoring offense for the vast majority of the season in Class 3A–which averages 77.5 points per game, their opponents from west central Iowa rely on three players over 6-7 and the 9th best defense, which allows 49.2 points per contest.
Pella Head Coach Derek Schulte says they haven’t really faced a team quite like Sergeant Bluff-Luton, but he’s confident that as long as the green and white do what they do best, they can advance to the semifinals round.
“They’ve got great size — three guys in the starting lineup at or over 6-7, and they present unique challenges in that way, just as we do to teams,” he says. “They come from a great conference and have played great competition, and we know the last time Pella was at state, this was the same opponent…we’re excited for the opportunity to play a top-notch team.”
Daniel Wright of SBL, a 6-8 senior, is the 3rd best rebounder in Class 3A, averaging 10 per game, and scores nearly 15 points per game, while the six-foot seven-inch junior Jake Layman averages 11 points per contest.
Coverage from Wells Fargo Arena of Pella boys state tournament basketball begins at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday on 92.1 KRLS, with opening tip at 4:30 p.m. in Des Moines.
