As area residents prepare to take part in the upcoming Census, Knoxville Middle School students were given the opportunity recently to learn more about the importance of the U.S. Census during Statistics in Schools Week, which ran March 2nd through the 6th. Throughout the week, students explored how the Census is taken and the types of questions it asks. They also learned how the data collected affects more than $675 billion in federal funding distributed to states and communities each year for schools, healthcare facilities, roads, transportation, recreation centers and social services. KMS students were able to take their own Census to see what it’s like to answer questions on their own. Students learned that nearly one-third of their peers have four people living in their households, and that their favorite subject in school is math. The most common favorite food for KMS students is pizza.
