The Real ID act deadline was recently extended by President Donal Trump due to the current COVID-19 pandemic. The new Real ID deadline is October 1st of 2021. Marion County Treasurer Michaela Bigaouette tells KNIA/KRLS News its excellent news as it will allow more time for residents to obtain the Real ID as well as give some relief to her staff. Bigaouette says anyone who still needs a new ID and has questions can call the Treasurer’s Office and the staff will walk you through what documents are needed to obtain the ID. After the Real ID act goes into effect, residents will need to have an officially-recognized ID card to fly commercially or gain entry onto federal property. Drivers licenses which are compliant with Real ID resemble a normal license; the only difference is a yellow star insignia imprinted on the card, which tells authorities the bearer’s identification has been verified. To obtain a Real ID certain documentation must be provided to establish your identity. For a list of required documents, visit https://iowadot.gov/mvd/realid/  or call the Treasurer’s office at 641-828-2202
