If schools open up later this spring and activities are given the go-ahead from the Iowa Department of Public Health, competition won’t just resume on the original schedule. Indianola Activities Director Lee Nelson tells KNIA Sports there is a preseason for a reason, there has to be some time for instruction and to get athletes time to be ready.

“I think the biggest thing is trying to figure out what’s best for the kids, that’s the important part here. We don’t want to put them into situations they aren’t ready for. Sometimes you have to because seasons move quick and you maybe have to play a kid on varsity who has never done it before, that is normal but this is different. But as far as safety and the health of our kids that will be number one as far as a schedule if and when we do come back.”

Nelson also said planning ahead for future competitions won’t be easy, but if somehow spring sports resume he and other activities directors in the area will do their best to come up with something.
