During the boys state basketball tournament, local official Jim Crozier, who is also the athletic director at Melcher-Dallas High School, was honored with getting assigned to officiate the 1A state title game between Wapsie Valley and Algona Garrigan. That was also the day that the boys association restricted fans to just a few hundred due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Crozier tells KNIA Sports it was different to have so few fans, but the games went on and the players played as if there was a composite crowd inside Wells Fargo Arena.

Crozier:
“The same as normal but you could hear the sneakers squeaking on the floor which you don’t hear when the place is full. But the kids still played hard and the parents cheered loud but it was a different situation that you weren’t used to.”

Crozier is also the boys and girls golf coach at Melcher-Dallas, and tells KNIA Sports he was looking forward to the season with 13 total kids out this spring. He is hopeful that the season will continue in some form.
