The Iowa Legislature has moved back the date they are reconvening to April 30th based on the latest recommendation from Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds, after originally scheduled to be back in session by April 15th. State Senator Julian Garrett tells KNIA News despite the pandemic’s effect on the economy, he thinks the state continues to be in a good fiscal situation.
“We are anticipating that the revenues will be down, but due to the fact that we were fairly conservative a year ago we don’t think we will be running a deficit. We had the rainy day fund and economic emergency funds are full, we had a surplus last year. So we have extra revenue, we didn’t spend right up to the limit so even if revenue is down we think we are going to be OK.”
Senator Garrett also said he has full confidence in Governor Reynolds and supports how she is handling the crisis, and the legislature is still working to keep state business running as smoothly as possible.
