Like every other college sports team, the Central men’s tennis team had its season cut short due to the COVID-19 outbreak. While the win-loss record was not something to behold, the team experienced exponential improvement while playing some very talented teams. Head Coach Ryun Ferrell scheduled some of the best teams in the Midwest in non-conference play, and says his team could have performed well throughout conference play because of the lessons learned early on.
“Honestly, this is the most talented men’s team I’ve ever had. The schedule I put together was extremely intense and very, very hard. Any team that we lost to could’ve been 1 or 2 in our league. By the end of where we were, instead of getting thumped like we were before, it was getting really, really tight. We were making those strides. We weren’t winning those matches, but we were doing what needed to be done, and we looked really, really good. I was pumped to see it, I was pumped to be a part of it. And I wish we could have finished it, because I think we would’ve done something really neat in our league by the end of the year.”
The Dutch finished 2-11 overall and 1-1 in conference play. One of the team goals was to defeat Luther or Coe, the two best teams in the American Rivers Conference. Central did not get that opportunity, but will only say goodbye to two seniors.
