The Knoxville City Council approved upgrades to the security at City Hall during the most recent city council meeting Monday, as the city will replace certain lock and key doors with RFID doors or Radio-frequency identification doors. The RFID doors allow for a badge to be swiped to gain entry instead of the common lock and key. According to the city, the idea was initiated as some current county facilities already utilize the RFID technology and due to COVID-19 the Knoxville City Hall has been established as an Emergency Operation Center. Knoxville City Manager Aaron Adams tells KNIA/KRLS News the timing is right to upgrade the security and due to the city operating an Emergency Operation Center, the city can now apply for certain grants and funds that normally would not be available and could potentially reimburse the city up to 85 percent of the cost to install the technology.
