The current Iowa high school sports shutdown has summer sports athletes getting restless and waiting to hear the fate of their season. During this time, no formal instruction is allowed from coaches to student-athletes. With school facilities also closed, it makes things such as batting cages off limits to the athletes who may benefit from using them. Pleasantville Softball coach Jan Haugen says that while it’s tough to have to deny access, the rules must be followed.

“They’re chomping at the bit, they’re really ready to go. Some of them have been bugging me, wanting me to put the cage up so they can go up individually and do some things on their own. And the rules are quite specific as far as contact, even video contact, you’re not supposed to give out any drills. Not supposed to talk to the kids and tell them what to do. So it’s pretty stringent, but it is hard, especially for those kids, and I’ve got a half a dozen kids that love softball and don’t go out for track or golf. So they are almost beside themselves, waiting to get us going again.”

A decision on the summer sports season will be made before June 1st. The Trojans would start the season at home against Earlham on June 2nd if the current schedule holds up.
