One of the many downsides to the cancellation of spring sports is the opportunity to compete at the highest level. For track and field athletes, the chance to run on the blue oval at Drake Stadium is a magical experience, and one of the most electric atmospheres in all of Iowa high school sports. The PCM girls were looking to qualify several events to this year’s state meet, but will not get that chance. Head Coach Eric Karr highlights some of the athletes and events that he envisioned would make it, that now won’t be able to.

“Celeste Wagaman, who just barely missed going to state in the high jump last year, looking for her to finally qualify on that end of it. The 4×8, we qualified two years ago, and then we bring in three or four very talented freshman runners that will eventually have the school record at the 4×8. Just things that we don’t know now.”

Despite the loss of the season, the 4×800 meter relay, built mostly of younger runners, will have more chances in future seasons. Celeste Wagaman will miss her junior campaign, and will likely return very motivated to make it to state in her senior year next season. 10 seniors will depart the program.
