A talented dual sport athlete is heading to the gridiron after graduating from Pella High School. Mason Huerter will continue his athletic pursuits with the Central College football team this fall.
Huerter says he gravitated toward the Dutch coaching staff, and the itch to keep competing grew bigger after he learned of the cancellation of his spring season as a shot put thrower.
“It was the coaching staff — they are just amazing, Coach [Eric] Jones, Coach [Jeff] McMartin, and Coach [Ryan] Maiuri, they’re phenomenal guys who just want the best–not just on the field, but off the field and in the classroom. They were easy to make the decision to continue playing for.”
“What really made me want to come is just the lack of the competition during this quarantine deal — it made me really want to continue to compete at the next level, and I felt there was no better place than Central,” he says.
Huerter was selected to compete in the 2020 Shrine Bowl representing Pella High School this year, and last spring, ripped off the fourth longest throw in Class 3A shot put distances at 54-10.00 on April 4th, 2019–also third best all-time for the Dutch.
