The PCM softball team finished 9-19 in 2019, and was bounced by Centerville in the first round of the regional playoffs. It was a rather sour ending to the season as well, as the team lost eight of its final nine games. While the Mustangs experienced some growing pains last season, there is reason for optimism if and when the 2020 summer season gets underway.
A young team lost only three seniors from last year’s group. Three of the top four batters return to this year’s team, two of whom were eighth graders last year. Hailey Schutte hit .274 last season, and is this year’s only senior who returns this season.
The pitching staff is still abundant with youth, as only eighth graders appeared in the circle last season. Paige Steenhoek started all but five games in her eighth grade season, and is expected to return as the team’s ace this year. She recorded 63 strikeouts and 56 walks with an ERA of 3.87 last year, and will look to take her game to the next level this year.
With June 1st as a potential start date for the season, the first game on the schedule would be June 2nd at Roland-Story.
