The PCM baseball team finished 17-5 in 2019. The Mustangs ranked among the best in Class 2A for much of the season, but tumbled to the finish in losing three of their final four games. A first round bye in the postseason earned PCM a date with Pella Christian in district play, but an 8-1 loss in State Center ended the season.
Six seniors departed the program last season, and with them came a good portion of the team’s offensive output. Junior Sage Burns returns to this year’s lineup after boasting at .439 average at the plate last season.
The Mustangs will be confident in this year’s pitching staff, as the bulk of last year’s starters returned. This year’s staff started all but two games last season, led by Iowa Western commit Derek Brown. In his eight starts and 10 total appearances, he amassed 58 strikeouts to only 23 walks, while giving up an ERA of 1.49. Junior Andrew Mitchell will be a reliable second option for the Mustangs in 2020 after he started seven games last season.
With June 1st as a potential starting date for the season, PCM’s first scheduled game is June 2nd at Pella.
