With May 15th designated as Peace Officer Memorial Day, and this week being National Police Week, the Indianola Police Department is asking for flags to fly at half-mast in honor of fallen former Indianola Police Officer William E. “Pop” Hickman through May 16th. Hickman passed away in 1957 from injuries sustained while investigating a vehicle accident and was included on the National Law Enforcement Memorial Wall, the nation’s monument to law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty. In 2019, 146 officers were killed in the line of duty due to various reasons. Over 24,000 peace officers have their names etched on the Memorial Wall.
