According to Governor Kim Reynolds proclamation Wednesday, certain businesses are allowed to reopen today. Businesses permitted to reopen include movie theaters, zoos, museums, aquariums, reception venues, state park amenities and pools for lap swimming and lessons. Director of the Knoxville Chamber of Commerce, Hannah Vander Veer tells KNIA/KRLS News she hopes people can stay patient as these businesses that are reopening have to learn new ways to operate to keep people safe. Vander Veer says business owners are under immense pressure as they have customers that want their service as well as the want and need to make money to survive. She says everyone is continuing to adapt and learn in this difficult time so it’s important to stay patient and be polite and understanding.
Staff with the Grand Theater in Knoxville was surprised by the governor’s announcement that theaters could re-open today, a full week earlier than her previous proclamation, which originally closed the theater through at least May 27th. The theater has undertaken a few minor facility improvements and some larger maintenance projects, all to be concluded early next week. Currently, the lobby and concession areas are torn apart with plastic sheeting hung throughout and floors covered to protect from drywall dust and paint. The theater is not ready to receive guests at this time and must finish the improvements, deep clean and bring various equipment back online. They hope to announce soon when the theater will reopen, what changes will be in place for everyone’s safety, and what programming may be.
