In the final population estimate before the 2020 census becomes the official count of citizens, the 2019 estimates show a slight decline in Marion County residents both in the past ten years and since 2018.
Overall, 33,253 residents are estimated to live in Marion County, down six from 2018 and 56 since 2010.
Pella slightly grew in the past year, with 10,235 residents–up 29 overall, the rural county population was up by 3 to 11,975, and Harvey added one resident in the estimate to 244 — but all other Marion County communities either stayed steady (Swan – 75, Marysville – 69), or declined. Knoxville is estimated to have lost 26 residents in 2019 and 145 in the population since the 2010 census. Pleasantville (-2), Melcher-Dallas (-8), Hamilton (-1), and Bussey (-2).

The State Data Center at the State Library of Iowa has released estimates for populations of Iowa cities in 2019 from the U.S. Census Bureau. These estimates will be the last look at Iowa’s population totals before the release of the 2020 Census. Charateristics of the population looking at age, sex, race and Hispanic origin will be released for Iowa and all 99 counties later this year.
