The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch in Marion County and portions of eastern and south central Iowa from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. today.
Slow moving showers and thunderstorms may produce rainfall amounts of one to two inches today, with isolated amounts of two to four inches possible. Heavy rain may produce flash flooding of small streams and creeks, and also cause significant ponding on roads, especially in urban areas. The heaviest amounts are expected in eastern Iowa.
The additional precipitation today comes after an active weather pattern has settled into central Iowa over the past two weeks, with many local rain gauges seeing between two to four inches of rain in the last 14 days. Those who encounter flooded roadways are reminded to “turn around, don’t drown,” and find an alternate route.
After today’s rain, more pleasant and dry conditions are expected to return starting Friday, with afternoon high temperatures hovering around 70 degrees with plenty of sunshine through Sunday.
