With the summer sports season competition set to begin on June 15th, getting in shape and ready for hitting and throwing will be a challenge over the next several weeks. Indianola Activities Director Lee Nelson tells KNIA Sports one of the issues will be how many JV games to play, especially due to the condensed schedule.

“A lot of it with the other levels will come down to numbers. What do we have for pitching. With softball you can generally play a couple of games a day and get by, but with baseball you can do that every once in a while but not every day. With the pitch count in baseball and lack of preparation leading into the season, we have to focus on keeping kids safe and their arms healthy. The season will be a bit of a spring, but we have to approach it as a marathon.”

Nelson also said the season will be helped by the fact that many athletes haven’t been idle over the shutdown, and are keeping in shape as best as they can.
