As the calendar flips to June, it will feel more like summer in south central Iowa.

Daytime highs will climb into the 80s for most of the week, according to the National Weather Service, with Tuesday expected to top 90 degrees. Heat index values are expected to reach the upper 90s, and even possibly hit 100 degrees in the afternoon. Overnight lows will stay in the upper 60s for most of the week as well.

The National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center has the trend for the month of June to be much warmer than normal and drier than average.

Those who work outdoors are reminded to drink plenty of water, use sunscreen, wear lightweight and light colored clothing, and take breaks in shade or air conditioning. And all drivers are reminded to look before they lock, as any children or pets left inside of a car during hot weather is at extreme risk of suffering a heat-related illness or worse due to how fast the interior of a vehicle can reach dangerous temperatures during hot, sunny days.
