The PCM softball team is 1-3 through the first week of the 2020 season. The Mustangs have a fair amount of youth, including two freshman pitchers in Paige Steenhoek and Riley DeVore. While freshmen, the two both pitched for the varsity team last season as eighth graders. Head Coach Shaun Hudnut says that there are a few things the two need to work on as the season progresses, but has seen marked improvement since last season.
“We’re not really strikeout pitchers quite yet. Paige has taken a step forward in that department, she’s got a few more strikeouts this year, and she’s added a few pitches to help with that. Riley has done a good job of adding a drop ball, but does a good job of locating her fastball and changeup as well. They’re going to have to continue to hit spots and trust their defense behind them, which for the most part this week has been really solid. We know we had some errors against Roland-Story, but we know those are things we can clean up and take care of.”
Steenhoek and DeVore are the only two pitchers who have seen action this year, and each have two starts. Through 17 innings pitched, Steenhoek has given up 15 hits and seven walks while recording 12 strikeouts. DeVore has pitched nine innings, giving up 13 hits, three walks while picking up one strikeout.
PCM has the weekend off from competition, and will be back in action Monday, hosting Gilbert in a Heart of Iowa Conference tilt.
