After four innings, it seemed the Pella baseball team could do no wrong, with the bats churning and starting pitcher Mason Wittmer cruising to a 10-0 advantage.
Three outs away from a five inning mercy rule win over the No. 3 team in Class 3A, the fortunes changed for the Little Dutch, and Centerville scored 13 times in the final three innings to come back and win 13-12 in a non-conference game heard live on 92.1 KRLS Tuesday.
Wittmer had set the Big Reds down with ease in the first four innings, using just 39 pitches to face the minimum 12 batters. And while Pella provided plenty of offense, the Little Dutch bullpen was not sharp. After 10 walks over the 5th through 7th innings, coupled with a few timely Centerville hits, the Big Reds rallied to take a 13-10 lead into the 7th with two, eight, and three-run frames posted.
A two-run, two-out home run from Nick DeJong brought the game to within one run, and back-to-back hits from Drew Hillman and Jason Knox brought the winning run on base, but a flyout sealed the comeback for the road team.
DeJong finished 2-for-3 with the home run and a double, and Drew Hillman, Cole Hillman, Nick Grandia, Aidan Pollock, Colby Van Gorp and Jason Knox each finished with two hits apiece as well.
Pella falls to 4-4 and has a trip to Newton for a single varsity game tonight.
