The boys and girls of summer from Pella High School both found a lot of success and runs in Newton after sweeping the Cardinals in a pair of varsity games, with Dutch baseball winning 12-2 in six innings and the Lady Dutch finding their first win of 2020 in a 9-4 contest Wednesday.
Despite the heartbreak of Tuesday’s pitching collapse against Centerville, the Pella bats just kept on churning, keeping the pressure on Newton throughout, with multiple runs scored in four of the six innings.
Meanwhile, it was a solid night on the mound for Senior Tanner Dunsbergen, who gave up just one earned run in 5 ⅔ innings, tossing just 76 pitches. Jason Knox was 2-for-3 with 5 RBI and a triple, Nick DeJong added three driven in and a double, and Nick Grandia had three hits and a stolen base.
The Lady Dutch controlled the entire contest, jumping to a 2-0 lead after one and adding four runs in the top of the 3rd. Pella took full advantage of five Newton errors, extending their lead to 9-1 in the top of the 7th, before giving up three late runs with the game well in hand.
Ella Corbin earned the win in the circle, giving up four runs in seven innings, while Tori Van Vark went 2-for-4 with 3 RBI and hits from Brynnlin Kroyman, Kylie Tauke, Kiki Riggen, Taylor Rousey, and Bailey Brown.
Pella baseball improves to 5-4, while softball gets to 1-7, and both teams have two to play Friday at Oskaloosa.
