Despite getting the early jump on the Rockets, five first-inning errors doomed the Pella Christian baseball team in their regular season finale, falling 12-5 against Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont.
The Eagles were able to score two runs in the top of the 1st, but the Rockets stormed ahead by scoring five runs, largely off of the miscues by P.C. defenders. A sixth error allowed the Rockets to lead 7-2, but Pella Christian scored three runs in the 3rd to pull within two.
But in the bottom of the 5th, a seventh Eagles error in the game was part of a three run inning that allowed the Rockets to pull away.
Luke Mulder finished 2-for-3 with a walk, Devin Haveman scored twice, and David Willis had a two-run single. Pella Christian finishes the regular season at 3-11 and will host Cardinal on Saturday in the Class 2A regional playoffs, with pregame at 6:45 and first pitch at 7 p.m. — a game that will air live on 92.1 KRLS.
After two days of practice to start the week, the Eagles softball team is hoping to start a path toward finishing with a winning record against an improving Grinnell softball team tonight as they travel. When the Tigers and Pella Christian last met, Grinnell was 3-5 on the season and lost 11-1 — they have now won six of their last seven and have evened their record to 9-9. First pitch of varsity action is scheduled for 7:15.
