The Pella Christian baseball team gets the Class 2A District 11 postseason underway today, playing host to Cardinal of Eldon. It will be a welcome return to 2A competition, as this will be Pella Christian’s third game against a 2A opponent this season. The Eagles have lost four in a row as the playoffs begin, but look to turn things around against the Comets of the Southeast Iowa Superconference.

Cardinal finished the shortened regular season at 7-3, with six of those wins coming consecutively to end the season. Head Coach Jeff Bruxvoort says that the Comets do have some weapons and good pitching, but he’s confident that the challenges his team faced in the Little Hawkeye has them well-prepared for the postseason.

“There’s four guys in their lineup that can really do some damage, so we’ve got to be ready for them. And at the same time, their pitching has been pretty strong. We know we’re not going to see one of those good pitchers because he’s already used his pitches for the week. We’re probably going to see one of two guys to start, and then we’ll see what happens. But our guys have been able to hit well this season where we’ve seen some pretty decent pitching in the Little Hawkeye, and even outside of it. So I’m confident in our abilities there, from the offensive side. And looking forward to putting up a bunch of runs during that game.”

It’s a battle of teams that are rather unfamiliar with each other, as the programs have not met in the VarsityBound era. Tonight’s game is the second game of a postseason doubleheader hosted by Pella Christian. Albia takes on Chariton in game one at 4:30. The Eagles and Comets are slated to get underway at 7:00.

Jon Mohwinkle and Dave Rock will call the action on 92.1 KRLS, with pregame coverage beginning at 6:45 p.m. from Pella Christian High School. The winner advances to Tuesday’s district semifinal round in Eddyville against Davis County.
