The PCM baseball team traveled back to State Center Monday afternoon to resume Saturday’s suspended district playoff game against South Hamilton. Despite entering the day with a 5-4 lead, the Mustangs could not hold onto it, and fell 8-7.
Play resumed in the bottom of the third inning with the Mustangs ahead. South Hamilton then scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a lead they would never give up. The Hawks extended the lead to 8-6 in the sixth inning with a run scored. Trailing by two entering the bottom of the seventh, PCM was able to put together a brief rally, but it came up just short.
Dane Owens had three base hits to lead the way at the plate. Durant Van Dyke drove in two runs on one hit. Andrew Mitchell was the pitcher of record, going 2 ⅓ innings, giving up one hit and two walks while striking out one batter. PCM’s season comes to a close with a record of 7-9.
The PCM softball team had one final regular season tuneup in preparation for the playoffs, hosting South Tama. It was one of the more thorough team victories of the season, with a 6-3 final score.
PCM scored the first run in the bottom of the first on a Paige Steenhoek RBI groundout. The Mustangs tacked on two more in the second, courtesy of a 2 RBI single by Sidney Shaver. Three more runs in the third rounded out the PCM scoring, and South Tama scored their only runs in the second, fourth and seventh innings. The final five PCM runs came with two outs.
Sidney Shaver led the way at the plate, with two base hits, including a double, and two RBI’s. Paige Steenhoek pitched the complete game, giving up four hits and one walk while striking out three batters. PCM’s regular season ends with a 5-14 record. They get the playoffs underway on Wednesday with a road trip to conference foe Nevada.
