Pella Volleyball Comes Back to Topple PC Volleyball
We begin our top ten countdown highlighting the first head-to-head matchups in the Tulip City rivalry, which on the volleyball court, favored the green and white from Pella High School.
As far as the Pella vs. Pella Christian matchups this season, across all sports that played, the games were as close as they have been in recent memory. But in volleyball, it was the Lady Dutch getting a 3-0 sweep, despite trailing significantly in two of the three matchups.
The rivalry started in the Bondurant-Farrar tournament on August 31st — with the Eagles taking a 21-17 lead after the first set. But the Lady Dutch rallied, taking the final two frames 21-15, 15-8. It was a sign of things to come when the two squads would meet officially in the conference season. Just four days later, the Eagles would take the first two sets 25-22 each at Eagle Lane over their crosstown rivals. But the Lady Dutch would rally with their backs against the wall, sweeping the final three sets to get the 2-0 advantage in the rivalry.
The final matchup between the teams was at the Little Hawkeye Conference tournament, hosted at Pella High School, in the fifth place match. Just like the first two matchups, the Lady Dutch and Eagles were close — this time with Pella taking the first set 25-21, only for Pella Christian to play the comeback role and win the 2nd 25-20. An epic back and forth in the 3rd and final set gave the Lady Dutch a 15-13 win and the series sweep over the Eagles.
