As we continue our countdown of top moments from the 2019-2020 school year, we go back in time just a few weeks to June 30th. That night, the Pleasantville baseball team picked up what is widely considered to be the team’s most complete win of the season, a 7-0 shutout of Interstate 35.
The Trojans struggled throughout this past season, but there were some bright moments for this team that never gave up. At that point, Pleasantville had won their second game in their last four outings, and were starting to play well as a team. After the game coach Sheldon Card said that his team was performing at a much higher level than the record would suggest.
“It was a very nice win. One, we scored runs, and two, we held another team down, so that was great. Some two-strike hitting that we’ve been lacking, some clutch hitting. We’ve left a lot of guys on base the end of last week and early this week, so it was very nice to see us compete at the plate. Aaron Wilkins threw a great game, got behind a lot of hitters and fought out of every single one of them. Got a double play out of one of them he fell behind 2-0, and our defense played solid behind him, and that’s what it takes. And if we can play like this, like we’ve said all year, they’re OK, we just have to limit those mental errors. And tonight we did.”
Aaron Wilkins pitched the complete game, giving up just three hits and striking out six batters. Wilkins, Isaac Mann and Wyatt Clark each had two base hits to lead the way at the plate. Pleasantville finished the season with a 4-14 record, and said goodbye to eight seniors.
