The number two sports story of the 2019/2020 academic year comes from arguably the greatest to ever wear black and gold. December 10th, the Knoxville Girls Basketball Squad played at Clarke, a game the Panthers easily won 62-21, but it was a moment in the first half that made it our number two story.
With that lay up and foul, Katie Keitges became the all-time scoring leader for the five-on-five era for Knoxville Girls Basketball breaking the record held for nearly ten years by Sam Abens. Keitges was never about records or individual achievements during her career and she said after the game that it would take a while to sink on what she accomplished.
Keitges:
“Cool opportunity given to me and a cool accomplishment, I don’t think it’s soaked in yet, I’m not real happy with how I played tonight so I’m not that excited as I should be about it, but it’s a cool thing and it’ll sink in eventually.”
Keitges’ name appears prominently in the Knoxville five-on-five record book as she currently holds six records including most points in a career (1,752), most points in a season (534), season average (23.4), career average (20.1), most free throws made in one game (13), and steals in a game (11). Keitges was also named to the Iowa Girls Coaches Association all-state first team, and led the Panthers to a 20-3 record last winter. She will continue her basketball career this winter at the University of Omaha.
