A Knoxville man faces felony charges following an OWI incident Sunday morning. At approximately 2:11 a.m., the Marion County Sheriff’s Office received the report of a possibly intoxicated driver at the Knoxville east Casey’s.
Officers observed the suspected vehicle leave Casey’s and travel south out of Knoxville. The vehicle then turned and stopped in the middle of the roadway in the 1400 block of 150th Place. Deputies checked the vehicle, and identified the driver as 26-year-old Zachary David Smith of Knoxville. Smith was observed by deputies to have bloodshot and watery eyes, the odor of alcoholic beverages, and slurred speech. Smith admitted to having consumed alcoholic beverages.
Smith performed field sobriety tests, and showed signs of intoxication. After refusing a preliminary breathalyzer test, Smith was arrested and taken to the Marion County Jail. Upon booking, Smith consented to a breath test, revealing a blood alcohol content of 0.196 percent.
Smith has two prior OWI convictions, and faces charges of OWI 3rd Offense, a Class D felony. A preliminary hearing is set for August 25th.
