As the PCM football team gears up for its 2020 season opener on Friday, position battles are in their final stages. Last year, the quarterback position for the Mustangs went back and forth between freshman Auggie Stock and junior Sage Burns. This season, Stock will get the starting nod with a year of experience under his belt, allowing Burns to be utilized in various other offensive positions. Head Coach Greg Bonnett says that Burns has the skillset to be used in a multitude of ways, and that having Stock at quarterback will give Burns the best opportunity to contribute in the best ways he can.
“We want Sage Burns to be able to do a number of things for us, and for him to do a number of things for us, the quarterback position is not the ideal spot for him. Generally speaking, if you’re playing quarterback on one of our teams here, you don’t play anything else. That being said, we really don’t want Burnsy to have to play quarterback. If we fail there, or if we start struggling there, or something bad would happen, he is definitely a guy that could go in there, and we’d have no issues with it.”
Last season, Burns rushed for 779 yards, passed for 619 yards, and led the team with 22 all-purpose touchdowns. PCM hosts Newton this Friday in Week 1, a game that will air live on the KRLS3 stream.
