Two area football teams clashed at Eagle Lane Friday evening as Pella Christian played host to #1 in 2A PCM. It was the Mustangs coming out on top in dominant fashion, 42-7, as aired live on KRLS.

After trading punts to start the game, PCM got on the board first with a quarterback sneak by senior Sage Burns. Pella Christian was forced to punt on the following drive, but Peyton Ritzert of the Eagles picked off an Auggie Stock pass, giving Pella Christian the ball in PCM territory late in the first. That drive carried into the second quarter, when the Eagles capped it off with a 27-yard touchdown pass from Isaac Kacmarynski to Eric Mulder to tie it up.

That score proved to be the only one of the night for Pella Christian, who consistently had drives stall, and was forced to punt four times throughout the second half. PCM got two more touchdowns from Burns and one on the ground from Auggie Stock. Aiden Anderson rushed for a score, and Gatlin Boell caught one through the air in the Mustangs’ win. PCM coach Greg Bonnett says that while his team could have gotten off to a hotter start, they were able to make adjustments along the way to put the game out of reach.

“We were expecting one thing and kind of got another thing. It takes a little bit to get going, but once we figured out what was going on, we switched to two-back, and I think that we had to do that, with what they were doing. Then our guys played physically and took over. In terms of the defensive side of the football, I think it was a pretty dang good performance all the way around.”

Pella Christian coach Rich Kacmarynski says that PCM is a tough team to beat, but his team made strides and will use this experience to better themselves heading into district play.

“PCM is a nice football team, they’re probably deserving of their ranking. And even though the score was not indicative, I think we made progress this week in our special teams and defensively. I’m not sure we made much progress offensively this week, quite honestly. But I think if we can continue to get better defensively, and keep our special teams going, our offense is going to come around. We’re going to get our offensive line back, we have a nice running back in Cody Boender, I think Isaac is playing well at quarterback. We’re going to put things together, and we’re going to be a good football team.”

PCM has now won three straight in the series, taking a 7-6 all-time series lead. The Mustangs improve to 2-0 on the season ahead of a Week 3 trip to Chariton. That game will be broadcast on the KRLS3 stream. Pella Christian falls to 0-2, and heads to Leon to take on Central Decatur next week. That game will air live on 92.1 KRLS.
