People who spend their mornings on the downtown square in Knoxville may notice a group of young construction workers at the courthouse. The Knoxville High School Construction Trades class, which also includes students from Melcher-Dallas, is partnering with Creative Landscaping and the county to do landscaping work around the courthouse as part of the courthouse project. Teacher Jordan Downing says his students are getting hands-on learning experience in a variety of areas.
“Me and my construction trades class had the opportunity to partner with Creative Landscaping and the county. The kids are getting the experience of working one of the construction trades, which is landscaping in this case. The project we’re working on is kind of cleaning up all the landscaping around the courthouse. We’re cleaning up bushes, putting down edging and river rock around all the sidewalks, areas where grass wasn’t growing well because of salt on the sidewalks, things like that. It’ll change the look of the courthouse a little bit.”
The students are working on the project Tuesday through Friday mornings, and have approximately three weeks left. To hear a complete interview with Knoxville High School Construction Trades teacher Jordan Downing, tune into Let’s Talk Knoxville.
