The Central College men’s golf team showed its youth Tuesday, sliding to ninth in the 10-team, 36-hole Central Fall Classic. The Dutch first unit, the Red squad, finished at 331-337—668, as four of the team’s five players saw scores rise on the back nine. Central’s second team, the White squad, shot 331-334—665 and placed eighth. The tourney was staged at the par-71 Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City, site of next spring’s American Rivers Conference tourney.

Nebraska Wesleyan University carded a 307-300—607 to top the 10-team field. Nebraska Wesleyan’s Alex Kubik used an eagle to fuel a sizzling 3-under-par round and took medalist honors with 76-68—144 for a 10-shot individual win. William Penn University followed at 331-303—634 while Waldorf University shot 315-330—645.

Central’s scores were tightly bunched. Sophomore Lucas Wendel shot 81-86—167, tying classmate Kyle Gabos who had 84-83—167 and freshman Harold Dobernecker who had 85-82—167. Freshman Matt Briggs shot 81-87—168 and Nic Kauffman shot 85-86–171. Central’s best finish came from White team member Mitch McComber with 79-84–164. Jake Moffett shot 83-84—167.

Central finishes its fall season next Monday and Tuesday at the Grand View Invitational at Otter Creek Golf Course in Ankeny.
