The Indianola volleyball squad fell to Johnston in the class 5A Region 2 semifinal Thursday evening 3-1, ending their season. The Indians would win set one in runaway fashion 25-17, then fell in a close set two 23-25, again in set three 16-25, then in set three to clinch the match 20-25. Johnston will advance to play WDM Valley in the regional final. The Indians graduate seven seniors from this year’s squad, ending with a record of 12-13.
Just a week and some change after the Indianola football team took down Johnston 17-7 last year on their home field, the 3-4 Indians will travel to the 3-4 Dragons for their first postseason matchup of the season. The Indians and Dragons are similar in style, both looking to establish the run to open up the passing game, however head coach Eric Kluver tells KNIA Sports the Indians spent their bye week working on themselves.
“Last week it was all about the Indianola Indians. We focused on ourselves, we didn’t talk about Johnston or prepare for Johnston. The game of football comes down to fundamentals and proper technique and things like that. So we focused on ourselves, it was a little bit of a more relaxed atmosphere in practice. We tried to shorten things down to recharge the batteries, then on Friday we put in our scouting report and gameplan for Johnston, which would normally take place on Monday.”
The game can be heard live on 94.3 KNIA, with Andrew Swadner and Rick Wilson on the play-by-play. Pregame coverage begins at 6:30, with kickoff scheduled for 7pm.
