After their second perfect regular season in three years, the Mustangs claimed a district title and a first round bye, and now host the Saydel Eagles tonight.
Earlier in the year, PCM traveled to Des Moines and blanked Saydel 68-0, the second of four consecutive shutouts to open district play. Saydel is coming off a week where they beat Clarke in the opening round 14-13. This was the Eagles’ first playoff win since at least 2007. They sit at 4-4 in 2020 after not winning a single game the last two years combined.
PCM has fared just fine following a season ending injury to star running back Aiden Anderson. Senior Sage Burns has rushed for 329 yards in the last two games, including 222 yards in their last game against Clarke.
As great as they have been, perhaps the Mustangs only unknown factor is their experience at the quarterback position. Sophomore Augie Stock has yet to attempt a single pass in the postseason. For context, the last time an NFL team won it all in the same year their QB made his playoff debut was the 2001 New England Patriots and Tom Brady. Head Coach Greg Bonnett knows that there could be a few jitters from his young signal caller, but has the utmost faith in number 10 to lead this team in a potential state championship run
“The playoffs are a different beast. You see some good things happen and some bad things happen. You have to be able to deal with both of them. There’s no way around it. Eventually, there’s going to be some adversity you have to face. When you’re the quarterback, it seems like you have to carry a lot of that weight on your shoulders. I really look for Augie to be a real weapon in the playoffs for us no matter what. He’s just got a great attitude. He’s a leader on this team and he’s a really tough kid. I bet he even does more than what I even expect out of him, if you will.”
