A torrid start and big breaks early in the first quarter were not enough for the Pella Christian football team to hold off No. 2 in 1A Van Meter, falling to the Bulldogs 49-23 as heard live on 92.1 KRLS Friday.
Fortune started the way of the Eagles, as they hit a 65 yard touchdown pass from Isaach Kacmarynski to Bennett Spronk on the first play from scrimmage, recovered the following on-side kick, scored on a pick-six by Drew Geetings, and forced a fumble deep in Van Meter territory in the first four minutes of action.
But Head Coach Rich Kacmarynski says they missed too many chances to keep adding to that total, and the hometeam Bulldogs got rolling and scored 35 consecutive points after a 14-0 Eagles lead.
Isaac Kacmarynski would find Caden Van Dyke for another score in the 3rd quarter, but Van Meter rolled their way to a school record 483 yards on the ground and 606 yards of total offense.
Cody Boender finished his Eagles career with a 12 tackle game and Peyton Ritzert added 11 stops.
Pella Christian ends the 2020 season at 6-4 in their 13th straight state playoff appearance.
