The Indianola City Council appointed Pam Pepper to fill the position of Mayor after the resignation of Kelly Shaw, a term which expires at the end of 2021. A petition seeking a special election was received by the City on Friday, October 30, 2020 and will be reviewed according to law. In accordance with State Law, if a valid petition requesting a special election to fill the vacancy is received, the appointment to fill the vacancy shall still take place but is temporary until the special election occurs and fills the remaining term. The earliest a special election may occur is March 9, 2021 and is estimated to cost the City $10,000. The current term of Mayor ends December 31, 2021 and will be on the ballot for the November 2021 election.
