Today is Winter Weather Awareness Day, a day the National Weather Service has designated as a day to review winter weather safety and preparedness. Meteorologist with the National Weather Service Jeff Zogg tells KNIA News the NWS added a new warning last year for winter weather events, the Snow Squall Warning.
“A Snow Squall Warning is issued for intense but limited durations, a small time frame of very intense snowfall possibly accompanied by gusty winds that can produce life threatening or very hazardous traveling conditions. That’s what we saw in the event in late October across central Iowa, a very intense snowfall in a short amount of time.”
Zogg also said the Winter Storm Warnings, Blizzard Warnings, Ice Storm Warnings, and Wind Chill Warnings will continue to be issued as necessary. The one to count on for winter weather information is KNIA/KRLS.
