The PCM football team traveled to State Center Friday evening for the quarterfinal round of the Class 2A playoffs to take on West Marshall for a spot in the UNI-Dome. In comeback fashion, the Mustangs won their closest contest of the year 21-20, as aired on KRLS.
West Marshall took a 12-0 lead into the halftime break, and largely won most of the battles at the line of scrimmage. It was PCM’s first deficit of the season. But PCM came out firing, and took the opening drive of the second half in with an Auggie Stock touchdown run. After forcing a West Marshall punt, the Mustangs capped off the next drive with a five-yard touchdown scamper by Jacob Van Winkle. On the next possession, Colby Took returned an interception 30 yards for a touchdown on a tipped pass.
West Marshall got within 21-20 early in the fourth, and had a chance to win it on the final drive. But the Trojans faced 4th and 10 from the PCM 20 with 12 seconds left, and the Mustangs forced an incomplete pass to seal the win. Head Coach Greg Bonnett says that his team saw a few surprises from the opponent, but his team was able to make the right plays down the stretch.
PCM moves to 10-0 overall, and advances to the Class 2A semifinals. They’ll take on Waukon in the UNI-Dome next Saturday at 7:30 p.m., with live coverage on KRLS3.
